FAQs

What is a balanced armature? How is that different thank a speaker?

Balanced armatures are a special class of speaker that have been used for hearing aids in the past but are now used in high end earphones because they give a faster, more precise sound.

Are more drivers better?

More drivers = different. All of our monitors are designed with a specific goal in mind. We design the drivers and internal components from the ground up to achieve the goal set out.

Think of it like ice cream, all ice cream is great, but you probably have a specific flavor you enjoy more than others. In the same way, all of our monitors are great, but each is totally different.

How long does it take to manufacture UE Pro Custom In-Ear Monitors?

Our normal turn around time is 7-10 business days from the time we receive your impressions and order.

Why is lower stage volume important?

If you want to perform at your best, lower stage volumes are absolutely critical. You'll protect your ears and you'll stay in tune and on pitch. Vocal fatigue is reduced and you're making it easier for the house engineer to dial in a better show for the audience.

Can I really use in-ear monitors to mix or produce projects outside of my studio?

Yes. In-ears become your portable studio when you're not using them to perform on stage. Producer/Engineer Steve Wilk recently created one of his hits while working in a cafe. He says that in-ear monitors "give me a studio with no borders. Whether its a hotel lobby, a tour bus, or a plane, I can create music anywhere and I know that it will sound fantastic.”

Do i need any other equipment for my in-ear monitors?

If you will just be listening to music, simply plug the cable into any iPod, MP3 player or media device to enjoy your music. If performing live onstage or rehearsing, you will need a wireless transmission system.

Can I use in-ear monitors for everyday listening?

You can always use your stage UE in-ear monitors as high-end headphones. We also created the Ultimate Ears CSX custom-fit earphones to deliver all-day comfort and glove-like fit for you off-stage listening. Learn more

Can I use UE IEMs if my band doesn't have a dedicated monitor engineer?

If you’re fortunate enough to be touring with a dedicated monitor engineer, obviously he or she will be responsible for everything monitor related, including your mix(es) and all things wireless.

If you’re touring with only a dedicated FOH engineer, it’s possible they can assume those responsibilities, or at least part of them.

And if you’re relying on the venue to provide both monitor and FOH mixes, you can certainly still use IEMs, but you’ll need to know some tips and tricks to make sure you get what you need on a night-to-night basis.

Can I just add a custom fit tip to the universal in-ears that I’m currently using instead of buying a custom IEM?

Adding a custom fit tip will alter the sound. When you change the effective canal length, you change the sound signature of any universal fit IEM.

Sound signatures are created by the combination of multiple factors including the type and configuration of the balanced armature, the filters and dampeners used, and the tube length from the armature to the end of the sound bore. When you replace the silicone or foam tips with a custom fit tip, you are essentially changing the distance that the sound travels and throw off the entire tuning.

Universal IEM’s serve their own purpose without needing to be converted into customs. They are great to have on hand for back-ups or in situations when multiple guest artists will be sharing the stage. But if you are seriously considering making the transition into personal monitoring systems, invest in a set of custom in-ear monitors.
